CREDIT TRANSFER SYSTEM - ECTS
(EUROPEAN CREDIT TRANSFER SYSTEM)
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has already been successfully implemented as part of the SOCRATES–Erasmus programme in a number of universities and colleges in Poland and many other Western European countries. Once teaching standards become harmonised across Europe, the study period abroad and in Poland, where this system meets the ECTS guidelines in more than 70% of higher learning institutions, will receive full academic recognition.
The system is used to estimate the student’s work required to achieve the objectives of the curriculum. When in place, the ECTS will enable our students to study at foreign universities and colleges (including but not limited to the SOCRATES-Erasmus programme), as well as foreign students to study in Warsaw.
The ECTS score provides a numeric assessment of the work which the student has to do during the semester to receive credit for a particular subject. The score awarded represents the number of instruction classes, defined as a syllabus to be completed by the student. The score per subject involves all forms of learning: lectures, exercises, dissertation and thesis seminars, examination workshops, and the student’s personal work in the library or at home, which are needed to receive credit for a specific subject.
The student has to gain 30 score points to receive credit for all the subjects in the semester and 60 score points to pass the academic year as a whole. In addition to the core subjects, which are mandatory during the semester, the student will also be allowed to choose from some optional classes. Thus, the student will be able to determine his or her own educational path, and even to continue his or her education at a relevant university or college abroad.
The paper contains basic information on the Mieczysław Orłowicz College of Tourism and Recreation in Warsaw, its organisational structure, academic staff, syllabuses complying with the teaching standards recommended by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and a draft scoring scheme based on the curricula adopted by the College of Tourism and Recreation.
