I.3 General Information on the College

The Mieczysław Orłowicz College of Tourism and Recreation was founded in 1995, and registered with the Ministry of National Education as Non-Public Institution No. 56, which provides courses in Tourism and Recreation with three majors:

  •  Tourism Organisation and Handling
  • Hospitality and Catering
  • Sports and Recreation Management

The courses are offered on either an intramural or extramural basis. Plans are being made to launch postgraduate courses in areas associated with tourism, recreation and sports, as well as courses for recreational instructors. In terms of teaching and curriculum, the College collaborates with other institutions and universities, such as the Institute of Tourism, the Warsaw University, the School of Economics and Computer Science, and the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. The College of Tourism and Recreation is a non-academic institution.

The College was founded by Centrum Edukacji Turystycznej Sp. z o.o., whose shareholders are, among others, the Polish Tourist Organisation and the Institute of Tourism. These institutions look after the College’s affairs, providing it with their curriculum-related and substantive support.

Currently, the College serves 849 students of these three majors, who choose predominantly the Tourism Organisation and Handling course (50% of all the students).

The M. Orłowicz College of Tourism and Recreation has a staff of 12 full-time employees, of which 4 employees are Professors, 1 employee is a Doctor of Science, and 6 employees are Doctors of Philosophy. The College also has 53 lecturers who work on a part-time or assignment basis. All these lecturers are named in the curricula and syllabuses. They include 2 Professors, 3 Doctors of Science, 7 Doctors in various specialities, and 14 instructors of 4 main languages (English, German, Russian and French).

The College’s courses are taught in the premises owned by the University of Physical Education and the School of Economics and Computer Science, whereas vocational training is arranged through various institutions and travel agencies all across Warsaw.
As part of their vocational training, every academic year the students take international internships in Hospitality and Sports Management in Greece, France and other European countries.

The College has incurred significant capital expenditure to upgrade its teaching facilities, open two modern computer laboratories, and furnish the lecture halls with multimedia projectors and other technical teaching aids.
The curriculum and syllabus have been developed so that graduates could acquire sufficient business background to start working in tourism, and to become efficient managers of tourist, leisure and sports companies in the future.

The College of Tourism and Recreation is the first school in the tourist industry to be honoured by the Polish Chamber of Tourism with the Globus ‘98 Award for its achievements in teaching tourist staffs in Poland. At the inauguration of the Academic Year 2005/2006, the College was conferred the Medal of Merit in Tourism, and an award from the Polish Chamber of Tourism for cooperation in and contribution to the development of the Polish tourism. The M. Orłowicz College of Tourism and Recreation has also received acknowledgments from the Polish Tourist Organisation for its teaching achievements and significant contribution to the development of tourism.
